We accept unsolicited script submissions via email or mail. As we tend to be quite busy, please allow 3-6 months for a response. 

We also run several programs throughout the year from residencies to creation labs, most of which have Fall intakes.

GENESIS 2020 CALL FOR PROPOSALS
JANUARY 31, 2020

In May 2020, we will be hosting GENesis 2020, a conference and festival with the theme: THE NEXT WAVE, a reflection of the last decade of Asian Canadian performance and research, a critical look at our present moment and a glimpse of what lies ahead. This conference and festival will feature artistic presentations and performances in the evenings, and paper presentations, panels, and round tables in the daylight hours.

FUTURE GENERATION SCHOLARSHIP: VOLCANO CONSERVATORY 2019
SUBMISSIONS CLOSE JULY 15, 2019

fu-GEN is pleased to once again offer full scholarships to the Volcano Conservatory in 2019, running from July 22 - 28. This prestigious conservatory provides access to alternative training in performance styles from around the world, taught by master teachers. The programs invite participation from all kinds of artists — directors, actors, dancers, singers — whether new professionals or seasoned practitioners, who are looking to expand their horizons and delve deep into new artistic territory.

With facilitators like Peter Hinton, Andrea Nann, Simeilia Hodge-Dallaway, Reginald Edmund & Marjorie Chan, this is an incredible opportunity for an artist at any stage of their career to enrich their practice.

Scholarship applicants can choose to take individual courses, a grouping of their choosing, or the entire week (maniac style). If applying for the whole week, please indicate which courses are of most interest in case we can’t fulfill the entirety of your maniacal dreams.

While priority will be given to Asian Canadian artists and artists of colour, this scholarship is available to all Canadian residents and we encourage everyone to apply. Professional development is vitally important to the arts, but opportunities are few, far between, and often financially cumbersome. By offering this scholarship, we hope to make a lasting impact on our artistic community.

2017/18 submissions now closed

fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company is now welcoming submissions for our 16th Annual Kitchen Creators Unit

The Kitchen is a ten month supportive environment where participants will have the opportunity to explore and develop playwriting skills through dramaturgical and writing exercises, professional and peer feedback as well as the creation of an original piece. Over the course of its life, we have seen over 80 artists through this program since its inception in 2003.

Professional experience with playwriting is not required. The Kitchen meets once a month, each session is approximately 3 hours long. Artists should be able to commit to in-studio sessions in addition to self-guided work at home.

Interested applicants should submit the following in one PDF file:

  • A Letter of Intent (Why do you want to be in a play development group? Do you have a specific project that you’re interested in working on? Why is fu-GEN the place that you want to develop your work with?)

  • Resume or Bio (please include relevant arts, performance, theatre, writing experience)

  • A writing sample (max of 10 pages.) Your writing sample should be for live performance; a scene, monologue, or performance text is preferred (no screenplays).

  • Only individuals or groups without artistic homes are eligible to apply

  • All performance disciplines (Music, Dance, Theatre, Technicians, Stage Management) are encouraged to apply

  • Applicants must submit with a specific project in mind that they would like to work on over the course of the residency

fu-GEN Guidelines for 2017-2018 Resident Artist/Company

We aim to support vitality in the arts by selecting one group or individual to become resident artists with fu-GEN. As Resident Artist, you will have access to our resources, including up to 175 hours of our rehearsal space. fu-GEN’s rehearsal space is equipped with full-sized dance mirrors, a ROSCO dance floor, a couch, and a kitchenette area. The successful applicant will also have access to music stands, chairs, folding tables and some admin support including photocopying.

It is our aim to nurture the creative process while respecting the individual needs of different artists. We are looking for groups or individuals willing to build a successful partnership to promote a sustainable, healthy arts community. Please note that we also welcome submissions from Stage Management artists who can articulate a need for these resources.

To apply, please send a letter of intent (maximum 2 pages) letting us know what you, your group, and your project is all about. We want to know how you will utilize your time in the space, and what makes us the best fit for you.

Please include in your letter:

  • a statement of intent

  • a description of the nature of your work

  • how you would use your time in the space

  • your mission or mandate statement

Please note that as per our mandate, pan-Asian Pacific artists and artists of colour will be given first priority.

OAC Recommender Grant for theatre creators
submission deadline: November 15, 2017

The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) Recommender Grant for Theatre Creators is a program that assists Ontario-based professional theatre creators - and informal collectives of individual creators - by funding them in the creation of new work. This program is assessed by theatre companies that act as third-party recommenders for the OAC. Recommenders receive applications directly from creators and forward grant recommendations to the OAC for authorization and payment.

Submission Criteria

Preference will be given to applications that fulfill our mandate.  This includes but is not limited to:

Asian Canadian playwrights
“Asian” is inclusive of the Pan-Asian Pacific Rim

Playwrights of Colour
This is inclusive of all playwrights who identify as persons of colour

Women Playwrights
Inclusive of trans and cis/non-trans female identified persons

This is a wonderful opportunity for the creator to work on a first draft or a project in its early phases of development.  If the applicant is a collective, the grant allows for initial collaboration and exploration. There is no prescribed theme, and playwrights are encouraged to submit all styles of work, including innovative pieces that involve multidisciplinary collaborations or test out new theatrical boundaries. We are open to a variety of approaches that each individual creator or collective may have. Each application will be reviewed individually on its own merits and needs.  The maximum grant request is $5,000, although recommended recipients may not receive the full amount.

All submissions are now accepted over the OAC online portal: NOVA. You will need to set up a profile in NOVA before applying.

walk the walk commission project

fu-GEN is proud to announce our first ever commission project under the banner of our Walk the Walk initiative supporting Asian Canadian women and women of colour. 

We are now seeking proposals from female playwrights/creators (inclusive of trans and cis/non-trans female identified persons) who have a new idea for a play or performance work that needs a home.
